Responding to the buzz that ensued when she stepped out in a noticeably shorter ‘do last week, the newly-single Jennifer Love Hewitt told PEOPLE, “I know everybody thinks it’s a breakup haircut—but it’s not.” Dressed in a sexy, sparkling dress by 3.1 Phillip Lim at last night’s grand opening of Esprit’s new Manhattan flagship, the actress showed off the cropped, curly hairstyle that made its debut on the heels of her split from former boyfriend and Ghost Whisperer co-star Jamie Kennedy.

Love Hewitt acknowledged that the shearing took place directly after the breakup, “But it’s not about that,” she insisted, laughing. “It’s just a ‘I-need-a-change’ haircut!” But that’s not to say the actress wasn’t at least partly amused by the virtual peanut gallery: “My favorite headline so far was ‘She Cut That Man Right Out of Her Hair.’ But no–it was really just for me.”

Rumors have been circling for weeks that the “Ghost Whisperer” and her comic BF have called it quits — and “Extra” sources are saying it is true.

A source close to the pair says that Hewitt and Kennedy were supposed to attend an event together last week, but Kennedy arrived solo. He was also not present at Hewitt’s 31st birthday celebration last month. Lisa Stanley broke the news on KEarth 101, and “Extra” confirmed.

The two started dating at the beginning of 2009. No comment from their reps at this time.

Ghost Whisperer star Jennifer Love Hewitt has said she and boyfriend Jamie Kennedy are ‘not rushing’ an engagement.

The 30-year-old actress has been dating Kennedy, 39, since the beginning of 2009, but she said they aren’t planning to take things one step further any time soon.

In June last year, Jennifer sparked rumours that she wanted to get engaged when she said in a radio interview: ‘If by this time next year, we’re not planning something, then there’s a situation.’

In a new interview, she said: ‘The engagement thing was blown out of all proportion.

‘When I made that comment about there being a ‘situation’, I wasn’t really giving him a time clock.

‘If it’s going to happen, it will happen, but right now we are not rushing anything. We are both just really happy.’
